Here’s an introduction to Luo (Silk Luo), a traditional Chinese textile。
It’s one of the oldest and most exquisite weaving techniques in Chinese textile history.
Among its many variations, Luo (literally “silk Luo”) stands out as a true masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship.
Luo fabrics date back to the Warring States period (475–221 BCE) and flourished during the Tang and Song dynasties.
Once reserved for royalty and the elite, Luo was prized for its lightness, breathability, and intricate structure.
“ Luo” (medium Luo) refers to a specific density and aperture size of the fabric’s characteristic mesh – finer than coarse Luo,
yet airier than dense silk fabrics.
What Makes It Special?
Unlike plain or twill weaves, Luo uses a twisted warp technique. The warp threads are deliberately twisted around
each other before the weft is inserted, creating stable, non-slip openings that look like tiny lentils or fish scales.
This gives Zhong Luo its signature features:
· Breathable and cool – perfect for summer garments or lining.
· Lightweight but structured – drapes beautifully without clinging.
· Natural luster – retains the soft sheen of pure mulberry silk.
· Durable – the twisted warp prevents yarns from shifting, making it stronger than many other open-weave silks.
Historically, Zhong Luo was used for scholar’s robes, fans, hat linings, and summer official garments. Today, it has found new life in:
· High-end fashion (blouses, dresses, scarves)
· Luxury bedding and sleepwear
· Creative home decor (lamp shades, window panels)
· Restoration of antique costumes
